A log rack is a stacking aid: two ends and a base that hold a row of wood upright so it does not roll and so air can move through it. The dimensions give the capacity — length by depth by height — and the honest way to read them is in stacked cubic metres rather than in litres, which is how the better sellers quote it. The stated load is the figure that decides whether the rack is furniture or storage: a full stacked cubic metre of seasoned beech is around 450 kg, and a rack rated for 150 kg is a rack for the week's wood. The steel gauge or timber section follows from it, and a rack that bows under a full load is one that will eventually spill it. Two design details separate the shelf. Ground clearance — a base that holds the stack 5 to 10 cm off the floor keeps the bottom row out of ground damp and is the difference between storing and rotting. And ventilation: a rack whose back is open dries wood, a rack pushed against a wall does not, and outdoor racks that come with a cover need the cover to stop at the sides rather than wrap the stack.
