A damper is a plate in the pipe that restricts the flow, and it is the cheapest correction for a flue that pulls too hard — a stove that burns its load in an hour is usually a draught problem rather than a fuel one. Two different products share this shelf and the difference matters. A throttle damper is a manual plate on a handle, set by hand and left; a draught regulator is a weighted flap that opens automatically when the depression exceeds a set value, admitting room air to stabilise the flue. The first is a setting, the second is a control. The figures are the diameter, the adjustment range, and — for regulators — the depression in pascals at which the flap begins to open, which is the only figure that lets two of them be compared. Then the one thing every page here reports because it is a safety point rather than a preference: the permanent opening. A throttle plate is manufactured with a cut-out or a stop so that it cannot close the flue completely, and a plate that can is not a stove damper.
