Rods, a head, and a thread that has to match both
A sweeping set is rods, a brush head and a thread that must match both — and the thread is the figure that decides whether a set can ever be extended. Sets on this shelf use several standards and they are not interchangeable; a kit bought for its price and then extended with another maker's rods is a kit that has to be bought twice. Read the thread first. Then the total rod length, which has to reach from where you stand to the other end of the flue with something in hand — most domestic flues want six to ten metres, and sets are sold in one-metre and 1,4 m sections. The rod material decides what the set can do: rigid glass-fibre rods push and turn well in a straight flue, flexible nylon rods follow bends and are what a rotary head needs, and the two are not substitutes. The head diameter should slightly exceed the flue so the bristles work rather than pass, and the better kits publish which flue size each head is for. Finally, what the box actually contains: a weight, a guide cone, a joining piece, a bag. Kits vary more in contents than in quality, and the missing weight is the part that sends you back out.
