Firewood, and the three words that change the price

Buying firewood by post is a recent thing and the listings show it: the same product is quoted in three different units, and comparing two prices means converting them first. A Raummeter or stacked cubic metre is a stack one metre each way with the gaps the stacking leaves; a Schüttraummeter or loose cubic metre is the same wood tipped into a crate, and it contains roughly 30 % less wood for the same number. A Festmeter is solid wood with no gaps at all and is what the forestry trade uses. A seller quoting loose cubic metres against another quoting stacked is not more expensive, and the pages here convert before they compare. The species decides energy per volume: beech, oak and hornbeam are dense, birch is lighter and lights easily, spruce and pine are the least dense and spit. The log length — 25, 33 and 50 cm are the sold sizes — must suit the firebox, and 33 cm is the common domestic answer. Then the figure that decides how much of what you bought actually heats the room: the moisture. Kiln-dried wood is sold at 12 to 18 %, air-dried at 18 to 25 %, and green wood at anything above.
