Stove pipes, compared on the two numbers that matter

A stove pipe is the visible length between the appliance and the chimney, and it is bought on three figures of which listings print one. The nominal diameter — 80, 100, 120, 130, 150, 180 and 200 mm are the sizes that exist — is printed on everything and is what makes parts fit each other. The wall gauge is printed by roughly half the sellers and is what decides whether the pipe lasts five winters or twenty: 0,6 mm is the common domestic gauge, 2 mm exists for the heavy cast-look ranges, and the difference is visible only in a specification line. The length is obvious but worth reading against the adjustable sections, because a run made of one fixed length and one telescopic section is far easier to dismantle for sweeping than a run cut to size. Then the finish: senotherm-painted steel in the usual greys and blacks, raw steel meant to be painted, or enamelled. Enamel does not need repainting and cannot be repaired; painted steel is the opposite on both counts. Finally the thing this shelf hides: which end is the socket. Pipes must be assembled so the flow runs male into female downward, and a listing that does not say which end is which is a listing that will be measured with a tape on arrival.
