A bellows directs a jet of air at the base of a fire, and it is the one item in this niche that is bought as much for the hearth as for the fire. Two products share the shelf. The traditional bellows — two shaped boards, a leather or leatherette gusset and a metal nozzle — is judged on the length, which sets the volume moved per stroke, on the gusset material, where real leather outlasts the coated fabric that looks identical in a photograph, and on the nozzle, whose length decides whether the hand stays outside the firebox. A long brass nozzle on a short body is the combination that actually works on a closed stove.
