Chimney brushes, compared on bristle and on thread

A brush is the head that does the sweeping, and it wears out while the rods do not — which is why it is sold separately and why this shelf exists at all. Three figures decide. The diameter should exceed the flue by a small margin so the bristles bear against the wall rather than pass along it; sold sizes step in 20 or 25 mm and the right one is read from the flue, not from the pipe. The bristle decides what may be swept: steel wire is for masonry and for rigid stainless liners, and it will scratch and eventually damage a thin flexible liner; polypropylene and nylon are for flexible liners and for stainless, and they are gentler and slower. Putting a wire brush down a flexible liner is the single most expensive mistake in this niche, and every page here says which flue each head is declared for. The head shape follows the flue section — round for round, square and rectangular for masonry — and a round brush in a square flue leaves the corners. Then the thread, which must match the rods already owned, and which is the reason a brush cannot simply be bought on price.
