Pipe heat shields, compared on the gap they hold

A pipe heat shield is a second skin around the flue pipe, held away from it so that a layer of still air does the insulating. It exists for one purpose: to let a pipe run closer to something combustible than the bare pipe may. Everything about the product follows from that. The pipe diameter it fits and the shield diameter together give the air gap, which is the working figure — a shield clamped tight against the pipe insulates nothing. The coverage length decides whether the protected section actually spans the distance at risk, and shields are sold both as full sleeves and as one-sided radiation plates for the case where only one wall is close. Then the figure that is the entire point and that only the serious makers publish: the reduced clearance the shielded pipe is declared for, against the unshielded distance the appliance requires. Without that number the product is decoration. The finish matches the pipe, and on shields it is more than cosmetic — a shield is the hottest visible surface in the room after the stove itself. We compare diameter, length, wall thickness, material, coating, reduced clearance, temperature and fixing.
