Kindling is the cheapest item in this niche and the one that decides whether a stove lights in one match or in five. Three figures matter and two are usually published. The moisture is the first: kindling has to be drier than logs, not merely as dry, because thin wood that is damp steams instead of catching. Kiln-dried kindling is sold at around 10 to 15 %, and the sellers who state it are the ones worth buying twice. The species follows: softwood — spruce and pine — lights faster because the resin catches, and that is exactly what kindling is for, which is the one place on this site where softwood is the right answer rather than the cheap one. The stick dimensions decide how many are needed: a handful of pencil-thin sticks and a handful of thumb-thick ones are not the same fire, and the better listings give a cross-section.
